IPL 2025 [WATCH]: Mitchell Starc removes dangerous Nicholas Pooran with a deceptive short ball during LSG vs DC clash

Mitchell Starc produced a vital breakthrough to shift momentum back in Delhi Capitals‘ favour in Match 40 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, dismissing the dangerous Lucknow Super Giants‘ batter Nicholas Pooran just when he looked set to explode.

Mitchell Starc’s smart short ball sends Pooran packing in the IPL 2025

Coming over the wicket in the 12th over, Starc unleashed a cunning piece of bowling a slower short delivery that angled sharply into Pooran’s body. Deceptively subtle, Starc rolled his fingers across the seam to take the pace off, exploiting both the angle and the surface. Pooran, anticipating a quicker one, instinctively went for the pull a go-to stroke in his arsenal but was rushed. The ball held up off the pitch just enough to upset his timing. Pooran, swinging early, could only manage a thick bottom edge that cannoned onto his stumps. It was a clever setup and a clinical execution, vintage Starc. The dismissal marked the fifth time he had gotten the better of Pooran in T20 cricket, remarkably doing so in just 14 deliveries a clear upper hand in this personal duel. Pooran’s knock, although explosive with two early boundaries, came to an abrupt end at 9 off 5 balls, just as he looked poised to erupt. Starc’s breakthrough couldn’t have come at a better time, injecting fresh momentum into his side and halting a potentially game-changing counterattack.

Strong start against Delhi Capitals undone by middle-order collapse for Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow looked in commanding control early on in their innings against Delhi, racing to 82/0 at the 9-over mark thanks to a fluent partnership between Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh. Markram set the tone with a quickfire 52 off 33 balls, laced with 2 fours and 3 sixes, while Marsh supported well with 45 off 36. The pair brought up 50 in just 35 balls and had Delhi on the back foot. However, once Markram fell to Dushmanta Chameera in the 10th over, the innings lost momentum. Pooran came and went quickly, falling to Starc for just 9 as he mistimed a pull shot. Mukesh Kumar then struck twice in quick succession, removing both Abdul Samad and Marsh to leave LSG wobbling at 110/4 by the end of the 14th over. From a position of dominance, the Super Giants have been pegged back, managing just 31 runs for 3 wickets in the last five overs, with Delhi clawing their way back into the contest.
