Oreo rolls out a chocolate-covered-pretzel flavored cookie

  • Oreo is unveiling a chocolate-covered pretzel-flavored cookie. It’s the latest in a long string of unusual flavors. The new option comes as Mondelez International food scientists use AI to come up with new flavor combinations for customers.

The mad scientists at Oreo are at it again.

The company has unveiled yet another unexpected flavor for the cookie line, announcing plans for a limited-edition run of chocolate-covered pretzel flavored Oreos, which will hit shelves on May 5.

This will be the brand’s first “sweet and savory” cookie. The baker says it will feature chocolate-flavored creme, sandwiched between pretzel-flavored cookies that are topped with salt.

There has been no shortage of unique Oreo flavors in the past few years. Among the offerings seen on store shelves have been toffee crunch, birthday cake, java chip, dirt cake, mint, and Coca-Cola.

The new flavor fusion comes a few months after Oreo parent company Mondelez International began equipping food scientists with access to artificial-intelligence tools to help them come up with new flavors.

That tool, the company says, can save between two and 10 weeks. (Taste tests of suggested cookies are still done by humans, though.) Mondelez has largely declined to discuss which products it has used AI on, beyond the creation of gluten-free Oreos and tweaking the Chips Ahoy recipe.

Beyond its seemingly ever-growing selection of flavors, Oreo has branched into new areas in recent years. In 2021, for instance, it partnered with Krispy Kreme to unveil two new doughnuts: The Oreo Cookie glazed doughnut was covered with the Oreo glaze, stuffed with cookies-and-cream frosting, and finished with an icing drizzle and Oreo cookie crumbs. The Oreo Cookie Over-the-Top doughnut, meanwhile, was coated with the Oreo glaze, then a layer of cookies-and-cream filling, and then drizzled with chocolate icing and finished with an Oreo cookie wafer.
