Mohammad Hafeez lists 3 key reasons for low crowd turnout in the PSL 2025

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) was supposed to celebrate its historic 10th edition with unmatched excitement, fanfare, and high-voltage cricket. Instead, what unfolded so far was a disheartening spectacle of vacant stands and subdued energy. Even the star-studded opening ceremony on April 11 couldn’t spark the enthusiasm that once defined PSL nights. The sight of empty chairs across Karachi and other iconic stadiums in Pakistan has sparked serious concerns about the league’s connection with its audience.
Empty stands haunt PSL 2025 : Mohammad Hafeez provides 3 key reasons
Former Pakistan captain and seasoned campaigner Mohammad Hafeez has not held back in voicing his concerns about this growing problem, laying out a blunt but thoughtful analysis of the fan disengagement.
“Almost empty stadiums in #HBLPSL10. What was the reason?#AskProfessor,” a fan asked.

Hafeez attributes this disheartening trend primarily to Pakistan’s national team’s continued underperformance on the global stage. Repeated failures in high-stakes tournaments such as the ICC World Cup and Asia Cup have left a bitter taste in the mouths of supporters. According to Hafeez, the fans feel let down by a side that has consistently faltered in crunch moments, struggling to bring home any major silverware. The recent white-ball series loss to New Zealand only added to the public frustration, further distancing fans from the sport they once rallied behind so passionately.

However, Hafeez didn’t stop at cricketing failures alone. He pointed to a broader and more structural concern: the declining quality of the fan experience. From poorly planned transportation routes and access restrictions to overly stringent security protocols, attending a PSL match has become more of a logistical hassle than a source of entertainment. Even for those who make it to the stadium, the in-venue atmosphere lacks the vibrancy and warmth that used to define PSL evenings. Hafeez believes that unless these practical challenges are resolved and fans are treated as valued participants rather than afterthoughts, the stands will continue to stay vacant.
“Reasons low crowd in PSLX. 1- Pakistan team poor run especially in big events ICC & ACC 2- Surely & rightly fans are not happy 3- Over all experience as fan starting from rout plans, security measures to get to the stadium & so unfriendly experience in grounds,” Hafeez said.

PSL 2025′ buzz fails to match the hype
His critique comes at a crucial time, as PSL 10 despite launching with a glitzy opening ceremony on April 11 has struggled to generate the expected buzz. The tournament, scheduled to run until May 18 with 34 matches lined up, sees Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium hosting 13 fixtures, including the final and both Eliminators. Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium will stage 11 matches, including the all-important first Qualifier on May 13, while Karachi’s National Bank Stadium and Multan Cricket Stadium will share the remaining ten games. Yet, none of these celebrated venues have managed to avoid the disheartening sight of half-empty seats.
