IPL 2025: Reason behind Shubman Gill’s animated celebration after Venkatesh Iyer’s dismissal in GT vs KKR clash

Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill is known for his elegant batting and generally calm demeanour on the field. However, during the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens, a moment of intense emotion saw Gill unleash a visibly animated celebration following the dismissal of KKR’s Venkatesh Iyer. The uncharacteristic display immediately became a talking point, prompting questions about the reason behind the passionate outburst.
Shubman Gill celebrates animatedly after Sai Kishore dismisses Venkatesh Iyer
The incident took in the 12th over of KKR’s chase. Gujarat Titans’ left-arm spinner Sai Kishore tossed up a delivery to Venkatesh Iyer, who seemed to be struggling for momentum. Iyer attempted a big slog to break the shackles, but Kishore cleverly held the ball back, denying the batsman pace. The mistimed shot resulted in a catch taken by Washington Sundar, sending Iyer back to the pavilion for 14 runs.
What followed was a stark departure from Gill’s usual composed reactions. As soon as the catch was completed, the GT skipper was visibly pumped up. Fists were flung in the air, shouts echoed from the field, before he rushed towards Kishore, chest-thumping his bowler in a fervent display of jubilation. This aggressive send-off for an opposition batter is not typically associated with the young captain.

Shubman Gill opens up about his animated celebration
Speaking after the match, which GT won convincingly by 39 runs, Gill shed light on the intensity of his reaction. He explained that the celebration was a reflection of the crucial juncture the match was in and the significance of Iyer’s wicket.
“We were ahead in the game, but it’s one thing to be ahead and another to close the game,” Gill stated. “Good teams when they are chasing or defending, close the game very well. So that was just some of my emotions coming out.”
At the time of Iyer’s dismissal, KKR were 84 for 3 in the 12th over, chasing GT’s challenging total of 198 for 3. While they still had wickets in hand, the required run rate was climbing, and losing a potentially explosive batsman like Iyer at that point was a major blow to their chase. Gill clearly felt that this wicket was a turning point, a moment where his team effectively “closed out” the possibilities for KKR to mount a serious challenge.
