Kristen Doute Claims Janet Caperna’s Personality Changed Once The Valley Started Filming and Reveals She Was Introduced to Their Group as a Fan!
Kristen Doute isn’t holding back when it comes to her complicated dynamic with The Valley co-star Janet Caperna — from how they met to what went down behind the scenes, and why she’s still struggling to move on from comments Janet made about her pregnancy.
In a new interview with Decider, Kristen addressed her headline-making remark that Janet was initially introduced to their friend group “as a fan” of Vanderpump Rules.
“There are some things that I do regret saying over the season — in that moment, that is not one of them,” Kristen said. “I meant what I said in the moment. I don’t think it’s any surprise to anyone, I’m pretty sure it’s out there on the net, that Janet was introduced to our friend group years and years ago as a fan of the show. This is not to say that I don’t love and appreciate fans of our show. That is why we do what we do.”
But according to Kristen, something changed — especially once the cameras started rolling.
“The Janet that I had been very close to pre-Season 1 is not the person that I saw when the cameras went up,” she continued. “And really, even after the cameras were down, but like over the last two years, there’s just been this, for me personally, just this huge shift in her personality.”
Kristen went on to suggest that Janet’s behavior started to feel like someone intentionally trying to “play reality TV.”
“Especially during Season 1, I felt like I was seeing glimpses of like, ‘This is how Stassi Schroeder was on Season 1 of Vanderpump Rules,’ or, ‘This was like Lala Kent on Season 5 of Vanderpump Rules,’” she explained. “So that is what I meant by effing fan.”
On the Season 2 premiere of The Valley, which aired April 15, Kristen and Janet came face-to-face at Brittany Cartwright’s white party to confront their fractured friendship — and things got emotional fast. “I feel very reluctant in hearing that you actually want to be friends with me,” Kristen told Janet. “After the summer, you went really hard. You did a podcast and said, ‘I don’t want your baby to come to full term. I didn’t support your pregnancy.’”
Though Janet quickly apologized, she also tried to give context for what she said.
“Brittany comes to me and says Zach [Wickham] was saying, ‘He doesn’t care if you miscarry,’” Janet recalled. “That f***ed me up. That gave me so much anxiety at the end of my pregnancy. I was not OK.”
Kristen didn’t defend Zach’s remarks but insisted that dragging her into it wasn’t fair — or forgivable. “Let’s take him out of it!” she told Janet. “Just say, ‘I’m sorry I said [it].’ You’re still giving me this gaslight apology that includes Zach’s demonic behavior… Your apology feels so not genuine.”
“Janet tried to paint me as a complete asshole liar all of last summer,” Kristen said in a confessional. “Just own your own feelings instead of running away.”
While Zach Wickham hasn’t had a one-on-one moment with Janet this season — yet — he did offer a brief mea culpa during the Season 2 premiere, telling Kristen and Nia Sanchez, “I definitely said some things I take full responsibility for. I’ve apologized.
The Valley airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.
