‘Babar has an ego issue’: Zaheer Abbas slams Babar Azam amid Pakistan star’s poor form

Babar Azam, a mainstay of Pakistan’s batting lineup, is currently facing a period of intense scrutiny regarding his recent form. Concerns are being raised about his performance, and veteran cricketer Zaheer Abbas has offered some insights into the potential reasons behind his struggles.
Zaheer Abbas decodes reason behind Babar Azam’s poor form
Abbas has publicly expressed his views on Babar’s current situation. He believes that the star batsman’s difficulties might stem from either an unwillingness to seek advice from senior players or a possible ego issue. He highlighted the example of Younis Khan, Pakistan’s leading Test run-scorer, who overcame a slump in form by consulting with former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin.
“I think either Babar has an ego issue or is too shy to seek advice from his seniors in overcoming his current situation. I think in 2016 Younis Khan spoke to Muhammad Azharuddin and went on to score a double hundred in England,” said Abbas as quoted by PTI.

Babar’s recent performances have been a cause for concern among fans and analysts alike. His last international century was scored in the 2023 Asia Cup against Nepal. More recently, his struggles have been evident in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025, where he recorded scores of 0 and 1 against Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United, respectively.
Meanwhile, Abbas also mentioned instances where Azharuddin sought his advice and Saeed Anwar consulted Sunil Gavaskar, emphasizing the importance of mentorship in cricket.
“I also recall how Azharuddin had sought guidance from me on India’s tour to Pakistan in 1989-90. He was struggling to find runs and I told him to change his batting grip. Saeed Anwar sought Sunil Gavaskar’s advice,” added Abbas.
