“Deport him to Sri Lanka ASAP”: Fans slam CSK pacer Matheesha Pathirana for leaking runs in IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has become the target of intense fan criticism following a costly performance in their do-or-die IPL 2025 encounter against Punjab Kings (PBKS). The Sri Lankan speedster conceded 45 runs in his four overs, despite picking up two wickets, as Punjab successfully chased down a target of 191, effectively knocking the defending champions out of playoff contention.
Fans fury erupts as Matheesha Pathirana’s expensive spell costs CSK playoff spot in IPL 2025
The aftermath of the match saw a storm of reactions on social media, with a significant section of the CSK fanbase expressing their disappointment and anger towards Pathirana. Frustration levels reached a boiling point, with some users even demanding the young bowler’s removal from the squad. Worryingly, the comments like “Deport him to SriLanka ASAP” and “Drop Pathirana” began trending, highlighting the raw emotions and impatience among certain supporters regarding Pathirana’s recent form.
Pathirana, recognized for his distinctive slinging action akin to Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga, has been an integral part of CSK’s bowling lineup since his debut in 2022. His past contributions, including a notable 19-wicket haul in the 2023 season and 13 wickets in just six matches in 2024, led to his retention ahead of the current season. However, the 22-year-old has visibly struggled in the ongoing season of IPL, with opposition batters seemingly having deciphered his variations and successfully targeting him for runs.

Even if #CSK scores 300 pathirana will make it easy for opponents. Still I couldn’t understand why he is in playing XI.

Been screaming this from the start. Pathirana ain’t the same guy, he’s tinkered with his action too much. Ellis on the other hand is one of the most improved white ball bowlers in the last 18 months. Stop this stupid death specialist gimmick. Move on https://t.co/f32tgk7ktK

CSK’s bowling coach defends young Pathirana
Despite the fierce backlash from fans, CSK’s bowling coach Eric Simons offered a defense of the young pacer during the post-match press conference. While acknowledging the increased runs conceded, Simons maintained that Pathirana’s accuracy hadn’t necessarily declined. “I’m not sure that he’s less accurate. I think batters are playing him a lot better. We can certainly see a trend in the way that batters are playing against him,” Simons explained.
