Kane Williamson names his next fab five of international cricket

The concept of the “Fab Four” has been a popular talking point in cricket circles for over a decade, referring to the modern-day batting legends — Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson. These four dominated the cricketing world across formats with their consistency, flair, and match-winning abilities.

As the era of these giants begins to wind down, the cricketing fraternity has been eagerly speculating about the next generation of superstars who will carry the baton forward. Now, one of the original members of the Fab Four, Williamson, has stepped forward to offer his take on who the next big names in world cricket could be.

Kane Williamson reveals the Fab 5 of next era

Williamson, revered for his calm demeanor and tactical brilliance, recently opened up about the future of international cricket. During a candid interaction, Williamson was asked to name his version of the “next Fab Four”, he smiled and added a twist to the question by naming five future stars.

“The five players that come to mind would be Yashasvi Jaiswal (India), Shubman Gill (India), Rachin Ravindra (New Zealand), Harry Brook (England) and Cameron Green from Australia,” said Williamson in a chat with Times of India.

Indian young guns lead the pack

It’s no surprise that two of the five players on Williamson’s list are Indians — Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. Both have already captured the cricketing world’s attention with their dazzling performances at a young age.

Jaiswal, known for his fearless attitude and aggressive stroke play, has transitioned smoothly from domestic cricket to the international stage. His performances in Tests and T20Is, particularly his double century in the longest format, have made him one of India’s most exciting batting prospects.

Gill, on the other hand, has consistently impressed across formats. Whether it’s anchoring a Test innings or accelerating in white-ball cricket, Gill’s technique and temperament make him a modern-day batting prodigy. Many already see him as the future captain of the Indian side, and Williamson’s endorsement only adds weight to that prediction.

A Black Caps star on the rise

Williamson’s third pick was fellow New Zealand star Rachin Ravindra, a name that has rapidly risen through the ranks. Rachin became a household name after his heroic performances in the 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, where he amassed runs with maturity far beyond his age. A left-handed batter and a handy spin bowler, Rachin brings the kind of all-round ability that every team craves.

England’s middle-order powerhouse

England’s Harry Brook has been another standout performer in recent years. Known for his attacking style, Brook has made a significant impact in England’s white-ball and Test teams. His ability to dominate bowlers and shift momentum makes him a vital cog in England’s future. Brook was also recently named the white ball captain of England team following the departure of Jos Buttler.

Australia’s next big thing

Completing Williamson’s Fab Five is Australia’s Cameron Green — a tall, athletic all-rounder capable of influencing games with both bat and ball. Touted as the next big thing in Australian cricket, Green has shown promise in every format. Whether it’s bowling long spells in Tests or hitting big sixes in T20s, he’s emerging as a complete package. Green’s ability to balance a team makes him a valuable asset, and Williamson’s recognition of his potential is another feather in the cap for the 25-year-old.
